each school send a copy of its 2003 volleyball media guide. These guides provide
the national coaching staff tremendous amount of information on evaluating
potential national team players. The media guides will also be entered in USA

AVCA MEDIA BENEFITS
Since 2001, volleyball sports information contacts receive
AVCA media membership benefits at no cost if that particular school's head coach
is an AVCA member. Among the information released to media members via e-mail
are AVCA Facts-on-File (weekly divisional newsletter), national polls, weekly
results, AVCA/Sports Imports Player of the Week releases and other
volleyball-related releases. To be included on the AVCA SID e-mail list, please
have your AVCA-member head coach forward your name and e-mail address so we can
include you on our contact list.
C. AVCA Match Score Reporting

CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll Daily Results Report
Since 2002, the AVCA reports twice daily (at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET
and 12:30 a.m. ET or until the last match of the day is completed) a cumulative
report of top 25 NCAA Division I match results to SportsTicker and various news
outlets. Therefore, it is imperative that teams in the current top 25 send match
results as soon as possible after the match. This can be done by updating their
season schedule on-line as noted about in the AVCA On-Line Results Reporting
Instructions.
D. Awards/Year-End Reporting Deadlines
All-America Team, All-Region Teams, National Players of the Year
The AVCA sponsors All-America teams for all three NCAA women's divisions, NAIA,
two-year college and two NCAA men's division (Division I-II and Division III). In addition, the AVCA chooses an All-Region Team for all categories
of four-year college women's volleyball. An AVCA National Player of the Year is
selected for each category as well. The AVCA sends out a detailed timeline for
the AVCA postseason nomination procedure to both AVCA-member head coaches and
their SID contact.
Tachikara/AVCA National and Regional Coaches of the Year
The AVCA selects a National Coach of the Year for each category of women's
volleyball and one for men's volleyball. Additionally, the AVCA selects one
coach in each women's region (two coaches per region in two-year colleges) as
part of the Region Coach of the Year program. The AVCA sends out a detailed
timeline for the AVCA postseason nomination procedure to both AVCA-member head
coaches and their SID contact.
Tachikara/AVCA Victory Club Award
The AVCA honors coaches for century milestone victories. The AVCA sends out the
nomination form to both AVCA member coaches and SID contact. It is recommended
to complete the form once the milestone has been reached. In addition, the AVCA
promotes milestone accomplishments in the AVCA Facts on File, a weekly,
division-specific newsletter. Please forward key information as coach's name,
milestone victory number, opponent and date of match to the specific AVCA e-mail
box for your division.
AVCA Team Academic Award
The AVCA Team Academic Award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors
college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by
maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale
and a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale during the school year. Nominating
head coaches must be AVCA members. Nominating deadline is traditionally at the
end of June, but exceptions are possible if notified of certain situations such
as late-ending academic year and delay in getting registrar's report.
Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week
The AVCA selects a National Player of the Week in all three NCAA divisions each
Monday during the regular season, except for Tuesday after Labor Day, in the
women's season. Division I and II conference SIDs must nominate athletes for the
women's season, while
Division III women's and all men's programs SIDs or coaches must provide the nominating details. The nomination
form is sent to school SIDs, conference SIDs and head coaches in August for the
women's season and in early January for the men's season.
E. Don't Forget the National Outlets
Most volleyball publicity is done via the internet. As such, the sport does not
have many national outlets that serve as a primary source of information
for sports information directors. (The AVCA and USA Volleyball that serve
coaches).
CSTV
CSTV is always looking for
great stories and human interest pieces to air as part of their coverage of
NCAA men’s and women’s volleyball. With a full slate of action again
scheduled for this fall we need your help to continue to cover the sport.
If you know of a player or coach with an amazing on or off the court story
to tell fire off an email to CSTV’s News Editor Andy Elrick at
aelrick@cstv.com
and fill him in. Include your name and contact information and all the
relevant information about the players and coaches involved.
ESPN.com
ESPN.com is also always on the look-out for feature articles on volleyball that
not only will stimulate the volleyball fan, but also the general public. It
often produces volleyball notebooks and feature stories on volleyball
student-athletes and coaches. To submit volleyball information, send
information to Dave Reed
at dreed@coloradocollege.edu or
Laura Reynolds at
Lauren.K.Reynolds@espn3.com.
USA Today
Like CSTV and ESPN.com, USA Today is always on the look-out for feature articles on
volleyball that not only will stimulate the volleyball fan, but also the general
public. The company, the print and web domain, often produces volleyball
notebooks and feature stories on volleyball student-athletes and coaches. For
the print version, contact Craig Bennett, USA Today assignment editor, at
cbennett@usatoday.org. For the on-line version, send information to
dotcomsports@usatoday.org.
Volleyball Magazine
The monthly printed publication features all types of volleyball including
collegiate, international, youth/club and professional. Contact Mike Miazga,
Volleyball magazine editor, at mikevbmag@comcast.net.
Sports Illustrated
If a student-athlete at your school has done something remarkable on the field
or in combination with off-the-field performance, Sports Illustrated has been
good about including them in "Faces in the Crowd." It's a good way to get
national recognition for your volleyball player AND program.
F. Good Articles for the SID
The articles below are written for the head coach, but many can be used by the
SID to better promote your team whether it is volleyball, lacrosse or some other
Olympic sport.
