REGION COACHES OF THE YEAR
EAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Dani Busboom Kelly, University of Louisville
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 28-2
It has been another banner year for the Cardinals under Busboom Kelly. As a follow up to the 2021 NCAA semifinal season, her team captured a third-straight ACC title and brings a 28-2 record into this week’s NCAA Regional. Louisville has faced the nation’s second-toughest schedule and has wins against 10 ranked opponents. Busboom Kelly was this year’s ACC Coach of the Year.
EAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Dan Fisher, University of Pittsburgh
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 29-3
The Panthers have been on a roll in Fisher’s 10th season as the school’s head coach. The 2022 success, which has included his team sharing the ACC title and being ranked in the top 20 all season, is a continuation for a groundbreaking past five seasons. In that stretch, Pitt has the most wins of any Division I school (138) and made its first NCAA semifinal appearance (2021).
MIDWEST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Christy Johnson-Lynch, Iowa State University
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 20-12
Johnson-Lynch and the Cyclones made it another season to remember in 2022. Iowa State advanced to its 15th NCAA Tournament in her 18 years at the school and the first-round win last weekend over Florida Gulf Coast was her 350th career win. Her squad has the distinction of being the only team this season to beat Texas, as ISU took down the No. 1 Longhorns 3-2 in Ames Oct. 19.
NORTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Leanne Williamson, University of South Dakota
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 29-4
Williamson picks up her first AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor after South Dakota went 29-3 in 2022. In her ninth season as Coyote head coach, she led the team to the conference title—and the NCAA tournament—for the third time in the last four years. She also was selected as the Summit League Coach of the Year for the third time in her career at South Dakota.
NORTHEAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Kelly Sheffield, University of Wisconsin
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 27-3
Sheffield isn’t resting on his laurels following a historic 2021 season, in which the Badgers captured the school’s first women’s volleyball title. This year’s edition of the Badgers emerged from the rugged Big Ten as the 2022 regular-season champs and they enter the NCAA Regional on a 20-match win streak. In October, the veteran coach picked up his 250th win since he took over at Wisconsin in 2013.
PACIFIC NORTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Kevin Hambly, Stanford University
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 26-4
It is easy to forget this is only Hambly’s sixth season on The Farm. During that time, he has led the Cardinal to three-straight NCAA semifinal appearances, two of which resulted in national titles (2018 and 2019). This year’s Stanford team seeks to add to that legacy, and, based on its 19-1 conference record and a current 20-match victory streak, earning more NCAA hardware seems possible.
PACIFIC SOUTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Jennifer Petrie, University of San Diego
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 29-1
It has been a magical season for the San Diego in 2022, which is Coach Petrie’s 24th at USD. Her team enters the NCAA Regional 29-1 and boasts the longest current win streak in Division I at 26. The Toreros have been ranked in the top 5 of the AVCA Coaches’ Poll since mid-September and spent four weeks at No. 2, which ties the program record for highest ranking.
SOUTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Brent Crouch, Auburn University
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 22-9
It was a season of firsts for Auburn volleyball. Crouch’s Tigers roared out of the gates to a program-best 14-0 start and finished the season 22-9, which is the school’s highest win total in the rally-scoring era. They earned a bid for the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in Auburn history and made the most of the appearance, knocking off No. 14 Creighton in the first round in the Blue Jays home gym.
SOUTHEAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
David Rehr, University of Houston
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 30-3
The 2022 Southeast Regional and AAC Coach of the Year has enjoyed a ton of success in his four seasons as the Cougars’ head coach. He became the fastest coach in program history to 50 wins, and this year’s 30 victories set a single-season school record. When Houston entered the AVCA Coaches’ Poll at No. 24 on Oct. 17, it marked the first time since the 1994 season it had cracked the Top 25.
SOUTHWEST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Jerritt Elliott, University of Texas
2022 Record (as of Dec. 6): 24-1
With two victories in this weekend’s regional play, Elliott and his team would advance to the NCAA semifinal round for the 10th time since he took over as the Longhorns’ head coach in 2001. He earned a couple of milestone career victories this season, picking up his 600th overall win and 550th at Texas in a 3-1 late October win over Kansas State.
