Erica Waiters, Western Branch High School
Erica shares her story:
“On July 10, 2024, my older brother passed away suddenly. It was hard, and I had trouble taking the time to grieve or just think about it because I was in the middle of summer training here at Western Branch High School, gearing up for my first season as a head varsity coach. Only one player was aware of my loss, and that was my daughter.
“The previous coach here at the school resigned without an explanation, so I stepped in after working with the JV. Everything, including establishing a booster club was new to me. I went from being responsible for one team to being responsible for running the whole program and getting funds … all the while being a single mom of two and a federal employee.
“My brother suffered a long battle of drug addiction and depression and, as large as my family is, he felt the safest and most comfortable talking to me. I knew his deepest thoughts, secrets, burdens, fears, etc. I carried them with him, and still do. It was both deeply sad and relieving to know he’s passed on; I no longer worry about whether or not he’s OK, safe, or locked away.
“I am a Navy vet and have experienced loss while serving, and it was my duty to press on then. This time, I had to tap into that sense of duty and, as a coach/mentor to the young people under my care, I poured love into my team and promoted supporting one another, not just on the court but off the court, too.
“While I am not the most experienced coach, I am very caring, and I want the best for my program. Our school didn’t have a volleyball booster club before. We didn’t attend college team camps, like we did this summer. I want my players to have every opportunity that is available to them, and these things help.
“I am still overcoming that grief and learning to take the time to talk (or write) about it. I appreciate the chance to share that, despite deep loss, you can press on.”
