New Division II Regular Season Attendance Record – UNK Hosts 4,003 Fans
A week after taking a part in a world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event, the Nebraska Kearney volleyball team got back the Division II regular season match attendance record Wednesday night against Peru State. A crowd of 4,003 bests the 3,888 fans that watched Alaska-Anchorage sweep visiting Central Washington last November. That tally had beaten UNK’s record of 3,520, set in 1996 vs. Nebraska-Omaha. U.S. Men Win NORCECA Gold for the First Time Since 2017
The U.S. Men’s National Team took the gold medal at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship for the first time since 2017 when it beat Canada 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) on Sunday at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. The United States finished the tournament undefeated at 5-0. Canada (3-1) took the silver medal. Earlier in the day, Cuba took the bronze medal with a 3-0 win over the Dominican Republic. Read more.

Eckerd College Breaks Ground on 4 New Beach Courts
In addition to building four varsity courts, the Tim Scovanner Pavilion, a baseball-stadium-style berm seating area, shower stations and live-streaming capabilities for competitions will complete the project. Eckerd’s NCAA Division II team has been hosting tournaments off campus for at least six years because having only two courts limits the speed of competition and causes logistical challenges for organizers.
Athletic Director Tom Ryan: “Not only will the new venue benefit our Beach Volleyball program, but it will also be an asset for the campus,” Ryan says. “Beach volleyball is a fast-growing sport within the NCAA, and we are adding it as a Sunshine State Conference sport next year. We are excited for the possibility of hosting SSC Championships to showcase our waterfront campus.” More here.

Last week on the MasterCoaches Wednesday Weekly Buzz our topic was “Volleyball Day in Nebraska.” The MasterCoaches interviewed AVCA CEO Dr. Jaime Gordon on his first hand experience at this historic event, the implications this may have on volleyball and its future. MasterCoaches also interviewed Dani Busboom-Kelly, a former Cornhusker, assistant coach at Nebraska and now one of the young female leaders in volleyball nationally as Head Coach of the University of Louisville. She spoke about her emotional connection to the historic match and how this event has to be a springboard for more record crowds and events moving forward.
This week our topic is “The College/International VB Mix.” We will start with our most recent results and significant play from NCAA DI play last week. Then we will interview Erin Virtue and Alfee Reft talking about their dual role with college coaching while assisting the USA National Team. We will finish with a discussion on the USA Qualifying tournament.

Montana’s Allison Lawrence has now inked a new contract that runs through the end of the 2024 season. She led Montana to a 17-12 record in 2022 – the program’s best mark since 1999 – and its highest Big Sky finish since 2010 with a 10-6 record. It earned her the conference’s Coach of the Year honor at the conclusion of the season.
EKU has signed head beach volleyball coach Jeff Patton to a contract through the 2026 season. Patton is entering his third season as head coach at EKU. In 2023, the Colonels won a program-record 15 matches, including eight victories by sweep, and posted a winning record in the regular season for the first time ever.
