In a powerful example of sportsmanship and community spirit, the volleyball team at Community High School in Nevada, Texas surprised custodian Abel Rodriguez with a life-changing gift—a car. After learning he had no transportation, the team rallied local businesses and raised funds to make the heartfelt presentation. Their act of kindness highlights how high school athletes can lead with compassion both on and off the court.
The 2025 AVCA-The Marines Battles Won Award honors five coaches and 11 players who have overcome significant challenges on and off the court. Their inspiring stories will be shared weekly this fall, leading up to the AVCA Convention in December, where two honorees will be recognized with the award.
