Built Different: Culture Over Everything
In a landscape where resources often define results, this session explores how culture, standards, and belief can outwork budget and circumstance. I share how my small, underfunded program outperforms bigger, better-funded opponents by building a culture rooted in accountability, connection, and competitive edge. This session challenges every coach to look beyond excuses, redefine success, and lead with purpose -- no matter what the scoreboard or the budget says.
Abstract:
"Built Different" examines the structure behind sustained overachievement in collegiate athletics. Drawing from my experience as the longest tenured Black female head coach in men's volleyball, I highlight how identity, intentional leadership, and cultural clarity drive competitive success in environments not designed for it. The session blends practical takeaways with real-world stories on leadership, communication, and resilience. Offering a playbook for coaches who want to build winning programs that reflect who they are, not what they have.
Session Highlights:
- Culture over circumstance: Establishing values that outperform resources.
- Leadership identity: Owning who you are and levraging it as your edge.
- Competitive consistency: Turning standards into daily habits that travel.
- The underdog advantage: How being "different" can redefine dominance.
- Practical framework: Tools to build buy-in, accountability, and belief.
