Seeing the Game: The Visuomotor Foundations of Reading, Decision-Making, and Movement

Volleyball is more than a game of physical prowess—it is a sport of perception, anticipation, and rapid decision-making. This session explores how elite performance in volleyball hinges on the seamless interaction between vision, the nervous system, and motor execution. Grounded in both information processing theory and ecological dynamics, this workshop will help coaches understand why perception-action coupling is foundational to skill development. Coaches will learn how to design practices that enhance athletes’ ability to read the game, make fast and accurate decisions, and execute movements under pressure. The session also integrates insights from leading experts in motor learning, attentional focus, and perceptual skill to equip coaches with actionable tools for developing smarter, faster, and more adaptable athletes. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to explain how visual perception, decision-making, and motor execution are interconnected and essential to volleyball performance. 2. Participants will learn how to design practice environments that strengthen perception-action coupling through representative, game-like training scenarios. 3. Participants will identify strategies to improve athletes’ attentional focus, anticipation skills, and decision-making speed, based on principles from motor learning and ecological dynamics.
