The Pressure Playbook: Coaching Perfectionistic Athletes Without Breaking Them

Some of your best athletes are quietly crumbling. They push through pain, never feel like they’ve done enough, and live in constant fear of letting people down. That’s not dedication, that’s perfectionism. And if it goes unchecked, it can lead to anxiety, burnout, disordered eating, and complete loss of identity outside of the sport.
This session isn’t about coddling - it’s about coaching smarter and more intentionally. Because here’s the thing, coaches can either help athletes untangle their worth from their performance, or they can accidentally fuel the exact pressure that breaks them down. The way you talk after a mistake, how you run practices, the offhand comments about bodies or “mental toughness”, these things matter more than you think.
In this high-energy, interactive session, we’ll cut through the niceties and get straight to the real talk: how perfectionism shows up in your athletes, why it’s different from drive, and what you can do today to help them stay competitive without losing themselves. You’ll leave with practical tools, reframes, and team strategies that support both performance and mental well-being.

By the end of this session, coaches will be able to:
1. Describe how perfectionism in athletes often manifests as anxiety, shame, overtraining, and disordered eating—especially in middle school, high school, and college athletes.
2. Identify coaching behaviors and team cultures that unintentionally reinforce perfectionistic tendencies (e.g., overemphasis on “mental toughness,” body talk, achievement-based praise).
3. Evaluate and revise feedback, team standards, and post-performance conversations to reduce perfectionism-related distress and promote athlete mental health.
