The AFFILIATIONS newsletter is a forum for exchange and gives all AVCA high school/interscholastic member coaches an opportunity to learn what’s happening in these affiliate states.
The criteria for the Thirty Under 30 High School Award remain unchanged. Nominees/Award winners must be active AVCA members and be 30 years old OR younger before December 31, 2023.
Nominations for both Awards close Tuesday, October 31st. A press release announcing the Award winners will be sent out in mid-November.
Congratulations to the 1,110 student-athletes receiving the 2023 AVCA Best and Brightest Award. The AVCA Best & Brightest Award is an award meant to honor individual high school Senior student-athletes who excel on and off the court. To be eligible for the Best and Brightest Award, Senior student-athletes must have earned at least a 3.5 Unweighted/4.0 Weighted GPA (or the equivalent, if using a different GPA scale) during their junior year AND play in 50% of their varsity team’s sets during their senior season.
The AVCA recognizes all member head coaches who have reached milestone career wins of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, or 1,000+ matches at their current level of coaching. Winners will be recognized on Friday, December 15 at the 2023 AVCA Annual Convention in Tampa, FL. Submit your milestone wins now until December 1!
The AVCA Diversity Awards are a key component of the AVCA Diversity Development Team’s efforts to engage coaches as leaders, advance the sport, and continue to move forward with initiatives that lead to substantive change for society and the volleyball coaching profession. The coach development program, which started in 2015, will bring 20 volleyball leaders to Tampa. 2023 Recipients
The USMC/AVCA Battles Won Award recognizes volleyball players and coaches have overcame obstacles on and off the court. The AVCA is sharing the profiles of the coaches and individuals below who have faced hardship and come back strong this fall. At the AVCA Convention, one player and one coach will be presented with the Battles Won Award.

The AVCA Boys Talent Showcase is a recruiting event designed to provide high school boys the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of the collegiate coaches that attend the AVCA Convention in Tampa, Florida.
Alabama High School Volleyball Coaches Association
Alabama Girls Volleyball State Tournament– The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Volleyball State Tournament begins today, October 31, and concludes November 2. The eight teams in each class have been placed in pre-drawn single elimination brackets. Play will be 3-of-5-game matches. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are played on the same day on six (6) courts. Finals will be played Wednesday and Thursday in the Bill Harris Arena.
Congratulations to the winning teams from the GHSA Volleyball State Championship Semi-Finals on October 28. Good luck in the State Championship on November 3-4.
The Grand Oaks Grizzly Volleyball Team showed their support for breast cancer awareness and honored some of their teachers during their Dig Pink game against New Caney on October 13. The Grizzles were the No. 1 Class 6A team in the Oct. 23, Vype Houston Rankings, and MaxPreps Houston High School Volleyball Rankings released on October 30.
Congratulations to Katy Volleyball Coach Karen Paxton on earning her 450th career win as a head coach! Coach Paxton hit this career milestone during a match last month vs. Huffman.
Homewood Flossmoore and Sandburg High Schools’ Girls Volleyball Teams raised over 400 dollars for the Cancer Support Center of Homewood in honor Sandburg Head Coach David Vales.
The Kansas Volleyball Association (KVA) announced the 2023 State All-Tournament Teams selected during the 2023 KSHSAA Championship. A State All-Tournament Team was selected for each classification and each is comprised of 12 players.
The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) announced its sixteenth annual Region Players and Region Coaches of the Year last week. All recipients will be honored at the 2023 KHSAA State Tournament at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester during ceremonies between the semi-final matches on Saturday, November 4.
The 40th Nebraska Coaches Association (NCA) All-Star Volleyball Match is planned for Tuesday, July 23, 2024, 6:00pm, at Lincoln North Star High School. Congratulations Coaches of the 40th NCA Volleyball All-Star Match:
Nebraska continues to honor legendary Wisner-Pilger Volleyball Coach Jean Groth who was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023. Her career record of 828-252 included five trips to state finals and the 1994 Class C-2 state championship.
Also inducted for volleyball into the Hall of the Fame this year was Stephanie Streeks-Gering. Athlete Stephanie (Steeks) Ruffridge rewrote all the record books at Gering High School before earning a national championship ring with the Long Beach State volleyball team.
The Ansley Girls Volleyball Team, 1973-74 Class C State Champions with 19-0 record were honored during this year’s Hall of Fame Ceremony as a Golden Anniversary Team.
The New York Volleyball Coaches Association (NYVCA) announced the NYVCA boys volleyball statewide rankings as of October 27, 2023. Fairport (D1) and Jamesville Dewitt (D2) remain the No. 1 teams in their respective divisions, while Spencerport (D2) moved up to the No. 2 spot.
The North Carolina Volleyball Coaches Association (NCVBCA) announced the 2023-24 All-Region Teams yesterday, October 30. The teams were announced by Class, and included 181 student-athletes nominated by NC head coaches. Voting for All-State Teams is open now until November 6, to NCVBCA/AVCA member head coaches. for All-State.
All NCVBCA/AVCA member coaches are also encouraged to nominate their fellow coaches to the 2023-24 NCVBCA Coach of the Year now until November 6.

The 2023 California Girls Volleyball State Championship Brackets will be announced on Sunday, November 5, with the Regional Championships beginning on November 7, at their host sites. The State Championships are scheduled at Santiago Canyon College, Orange on Friday, November 17 (Divisions I and V), and on Saturday, November 18 (Divisions II, III, IV and Open). All State Finals matches will be broadcast via the NFHS Network.
The California Interscholastic Federation published their Girls Volleyball Top 25 Statewide Weekly Rankings and Top 25 Regional Weekly Rankings on October 26. There wasn’t a great deal of movement for most teams in the rankings with Mater Dei, Mira Costa and Cathedral Catholic remaining in the top 3 spots. No. 25 Oaks Christian was a newly added team last week.
The California Coaches Association (CCA) announced a new website last week called CalGamesWanted.com with special benefits to CCA members. The site is designed to make scheduling non-league games, scrimmages and tournaments easier for high school coaches. create a competitive non-league schedule of games and tournaments.
Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association
Congratulations to the winners of the Indiana Girls Volleyball Semi-States matches held on October 28. Good luck to these teams advancing to the State Finals on Saturday, November 4, at the Ball State University Worthen Area (Muncie, IN).
889 seniors earned IHSVCA Academic All-State honors this year, with the average weighted GPA an incredible 3.99! Several award winners were #1 in senior classes ranging from 100 to 1000 students.
The 2023 MAVCA Girls All-State Player nomination recently closed on October 30. The online nomination list and data will be shared with member coaches on November 6, to preview for the All-State meeting. The MAVCA Annual Meeting and All-State Voting will occur via Zoom on November 12, and the MAVCA 2023 All-State Showcase will be held at Westborough High School on November 20.

The MHSAA and Holly school communities are grieving after the sudden loss of Tony Coggins, a shining light in his educational community and an enthusiastic supporter of school sports as a public address announcer for championship events including volleyball, football, basketball and softball.
2023 MNVBCA All-State Teams notifications were sent out via email October 30. The State Tournament Banquet is Tuesday, November 7, and the State Tournamentis November 8-11, at the Xcel Center.
The first-ever Minnesota high school volleyball state championship was won by Osseo in 1974. This September, before the start of a Osseo- Armstrong match, that 1974 Orioles team was honored for their historic accomplishment 50 years ago.

The Minnesota State High School League announced this month the first season of Minnesota high school boys volleyball would be played in the spring. The sport officially becomes a sanctioned sport in the 2024-2025 season.

Congratulations to Head Coach Zach Young (Lafayette) for being named the 2022-23 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Volleyball Coach of the Year! As a coach, Young ranks #4 in total Championship wins at Lafayette Wildwood with 6 Championship Titles and 1 undefeated season.

The New Mexico High School Volleyball Rankings were last updated to MaxPreps on October 26, 2023. Las Cruces held the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 2 La Cueva (Albuquerque) and No. 3 Cibola (Albuquerque).

THSCA Volleyball Super Elite nominations are open November 6-30. Super Elite Teams consists of high school players nominated by current professional members of the THSCA. The award recognizes student-athletes across the state for their exemplary athletic achievement.
THSCA Volleyball – Coach of the Year nominations are due by November 30. Each THSCA member is offered a chance to nominate a head coach and/or assistant coach to submit through the Member Portal.

AVCA Reveals New Logo as Part of Brand Update
The American Volleyball Coaches Association unveiled its new logo and marks yesterday, providing a fresh look for the 42-year-old organization. The new logo is a continuation of the association’s identity update that kicked off in July with the debut of the revitalized AVCA website. You can find downloadable versions of the logo in the AVCA Brand Kit on the website.
IVHF Recognizes Kathy DeBoer
The International Volleyball Hall of Fame recognized Kathy DeBoer with its Mintonette Medallion of Merit award during the 2023 Hall of Fame Banquet on October 21, in Holyoke, MA. The award is given in recognition of significant individual achievement and dedication to the sport of volleyball. During the ceremony in Holyoke, MA, the Hall of Fame also welcomed its six-member 2023 class of inductees.
