AVCA First Serve Showcase to Kick Off 2024 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Season
Four of the nation’s top collegiate volleyball teams will open the 2024 women’s season at the AVCA First Serve Showcase on Aug. 27. The event features Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, and starts at 7 p.m. (ET) at Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center. AVCA First Serve matches will be broadcast on ESPN2. Ticket pre-sale for team season ticket holders will open June 10, and for AVCA members on June 11.
The U.S. Women (4-4) split their first eight matches in VNL action and are in eighth place. Eight teams, including host Thailand, will advance to the Final Round. The U.S. will return to play on June 10 at 11:30 p.m. PT against France (1-7) to begin the third and final week of preliminary play in Fukuoka, Japan.
The U.S. Olympic Men’s Volleyball Team for Paris 2024 will make its competitive debut at the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) preliminary round matches on June 4-8 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
The U.S. Men finished the first round of VNL at 1-3. They are ranked No. 3 in the world and have won the silver medal at the last two VNLs (2022 and 2023).
Justice Department and State Coalition Restore Competition for College Athletes at NCAA Division I Institutions
The NCAA has reached a settlement with the Justice Department that will effectively allow for unlimited student-athlete transferring without penalty. The proposed consent decree “prohibits Colleges and Universities from infringing on college athletes’ freedom to transfer schools.”
The GPAC will no longer sponsor Men’s Volleyball, starting this upcoming year. As a result, Dordt and Morningside will join the Heart of America as associate members, with the conference splitting its 14-team league into two divisions.
Ella Connor, a beach volleyball student-athlete at Cal Poly, shared her story of resilience and advocacy with NCAA.org. Since February 2023, service dog Herc, short for Hercules, has been by Connor’s side, including at beach volleyball matches.
Recent UNA graduate and beach volleyball athlete Mackenzie Martin shared her struggles with anxiety with WHNT. As Martin moves on to the next chapter of her life, she wants the conversations surrounding mental health to continue, so every student-athlete feels valued and can succeed.
Nominate your top high school athletes for a chance to be recognized when the Watch Lists are released in August. Uncommitted athletes on watch lists will also be invited to attend the AVCA Phenom College Prep Program December 19-21, 2024, in Louisville, KY.
