record, 904 fans showed up to the first-ever Rock the House: Live in Gregory Arena match!
The Indiana Volleyball team set a Wilkinson Hall attendance record on Sept. 30 as 2,632 fans packed the building to watch the Hoosiers battle No. 2 Nebraska – the largest volleyball-specific arena attendance in program history.
Volleyball Day in Nebraska – Payouts and Lasting Impact
It’s been more than a month since 92,003 people packed Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium for the world-record-smashing celebration of women’s volleyball, and the magic hasn’t faded. Wayne State, along with Omaha and Nebraska-Kearney, will receive a payout of $50,000 for participating. Continue reading.
Specifically, the committees will review penalties for student-athletes who participate in sports wagering, but not on their own teams. The Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement is expected to complete its review and finalize recommendations by mid-October, with a final Council Coordination Committee vote on updated guidelines to occur at the end of October.
NCAA to begin advocating for updated sports betting laws in state legislatures
The NCAA will advocate for updating existing state sports betting laws and regulations to protect student-athletes from harassment or coercion, address the negative impacts of problem gambling and protect the integrity of NCAA competition.
The Macalester College volleyball team will honor former volleyball coach Stephanie Schleuder [AVCA President 2002-2004] as a part of Alumni Night on Oct. 13, when the Scots host Carleton in a MIAC match. Macalester will remember Coach Schleuder, who passed away on July 26, for the impact she had on the Scots and the sport of volleyball during her illustrious career. A 2015 inductee into the AVCA Hall of Fame, Schleuder coached at four different colleges in her 34-year career, compiling 702 victories, including 144 in 12 seasons at Macalester.

AVCA Thirty Under 30 High School and New AVCA Thirty OVER 30 Award
The criteria for the Thirty Under 30 High School Award remain unchanged. Nominees/Award winners must be active AVCA members and be 30 years old OR younger before December 31, 2023.
Nominations for both Awards close Tuesday, October 31st. A press release announcing the Award winners will be sent out in mid-November.
AVCA Victory Club – Nominations Now Accepted
The AVCA recognizes all member head coaches who have reached milestone career wins of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, or 1,000+ matches at their current level of coaching. Winners will be recognized on Friday, December 15 at the 2023 AVCA Annual Convention in Tampa, FL. Submit your milestone wins here!
The AVCA, in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, has developed a new award in 2023. The USMC/AVCA Battles Won Award recognizes volleyball players and coaches who are overcoming obstacles on and off the court.
As part of Battles Won, the AVCA gathered nominations and will present the stories of a dozen individuals in the volleyball community who have faced hardships and come back strong. These profiles will appear on the AVCA website and social each of the next six Thursdays, starting tomorrow, of athletes and coaches who are redefining courage. At the AVCA Convention in Tampa this December, one player and one coach will be presented with the 2023 USMC/AVCA Battles Won Award.
OSAA [Oregon] Recognizes boys volleyball as emerging activity
The OSAA voted to approve boys volleyball as an emerging activity.
In the spring, boys volleyball completed a season with 32 high school teams.To become fully sanctioned, it would need at least 50 schools to field teams. Read more.
AVCA Boys Talent Showcase – Register Your Athletes Today!
The AVCA Boys Talent Showcase is a recruiting event designed to provide high school boys the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of the collegiate coaches that attend the AVCA Convention in Tampa, Florida. The cost $99 per athlete. Athletes that choose to register will:

JVA Announces the 2023-2024 JVA Sponsor Clubs The JVA is pleased to announce the JVA Sponsor Clubs for the 2023-2024 indoor junior volleyball indoor season. Southern Virginia University to Add Beach Volleyball; Jon Baker Named Head Coach. By Fall 2024, women’s beach volleyball will be offered as a varsity sport with an exhibition season in Spring 2024 followed by a full competitive season in Spring 2025.
Ten years after its beach volleyball program was launched, the University of Oregon is making formal progress towards an on-campus facility for its varsity team.
Congrats to College of Idaho [NAIA]: who on Monday celebrated a ribbon cutting for their brand new beach volleyball court! The new program will compete for the first time in spring 2024.
League One Volleyball’s second round of fundraising more than doubled the money invested in the startup league. LOVB’s youth operation currently includes more than 1,100 youth teams and 43 clubs, in 21 states. The new pro league is set to start preseason play in November 2024

Ticket Punched: the U.S. Men’s National Team finished the FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifier undefeated on Sunday when it beat Japan 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) in Tokyo. The U.S. Men finished the tournament 7-0 and were awarded the “traditional World Cup” for winning the group.

2023 AVCA Board of Directors Elections
Voting for the Two-Year College Representative and NCAA D-III Women’s Representative positions on the AVCA Board of Directors will be conducted October 24-27, 2023.
Candidates interested in seeking any available AVCA board positions need to present a written notification of interest via e-mail to Kennedy Wells.Upon receipt of the written notification of interest, it will be required to also complete the AVCA Board Questionnaire (which will be sent upon receipt of the written notification of interest) by Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 5:00p.m. Eastern Time.Both the written notification of interest and the AVCA Board Questionnaire must be completed by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, October 19th to be eligible for this election.
Any interested candidates must be at least 21 years of age, be an active coach within the coaching group (Two-Year College and NCAA D-III Women) they will represent and shall be an active AVCA member in good standing on the date of election through their term(s) on the AVCA Board.
Current Two-Year College Representative Coach Shelby Forchtner (New Mexico Military Institute) will be seeking her first full three-year term after being appointed to the Board upon the retirement of Coach Paula Wiedemann. Current NCAA D-III Women Representative Coach Erica Rau (Oberlin College) will be the incumbent and will be seeking a second three-year term.
Coach Erin Lindsey (Santa Clara), Awards Representative will exit the board effective December 31, 2023. A new Awards Representative will be appointed by the AVCA president effective (retroactive to) January 1, 2024. The board will take final action at the December meeting on a Bylaw change to institute a non-voting At-Large Representative board seat effective (retroactive to) January 1, 2023.
