Multiple Federal Bill Proposals Drafted to Address NIL
College Athletes Protection and Compensation Act:Proposed standards would be created and enforced by a new entity called the “College Athletics Corporation.” The corporation would be charged with creating a formal certification process for people seeking to represent athletes in NIL dealings. It also would maintain a public database showing the number, average and total value of athlete endorsement contracts. In addition, the new entity would establish a medical trust fund that athletes could access during and after their playing careers. Read more.
Un-titled NIL legislation: Along with a section focused on liability, the proposed legislation states athletes are not employees and includes a state law preemption. The proposed bill ensures states are barred from enacting laws on compensation, employment status, athlete eligibility or NIL. Bill would also require NCAA member institutions to provide anonymized data on all NIL deals each year, specifically the description of services rendered and the amount of compensation provided. Sports clubs are rare on the Navajo Nation, so the Starlings reaching the 20-year mark is a major milestone. Most young athletes on or near the Navajo reservation are only able to play school sports, but Head Coach Harrison Miles believes club sports can be just as beneficial as they give kids more time to play, hone their skills and offers them a chance of competing against a greater variety of teams.
