With a record-breaking crowd of 17,032 fans in attendance at Fiserv Forum, Wisconsin dropped Marquette in four sets. The crowd surpassed the NCAA regular-season record (16,833) [for matches played indoors] which was set by the Badgers in Sept. 2022 at Kohl Center against Florida. It also is the most-attended women’s sporting event in Wisconsin state history.
At the Battle of the Bluegrass, Louisville defeated Kentucky 3-0 at the Yum! Center on September 13, with an energetic, program record-setting crowd of 12,760 fans. The match was broadcast on ESPN. The Cards came out on top in 3 sets.
Florida hosted their largest crowd in program history with 10,323 fans in attendance on Sunday vs. Wisconsin. The Gators fell to the Badgers, 2-3.
This week’s NCAA Volleyball matches on ESPN are now the top two most-watched regular season NCAA WVB matches on record across ESPN platforms!

AVCA Boys Talent Showcase – Registration Now OPEN
The AVCA Boys Talent Showcase is a recruiting event designed to provide high school boys the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of the collegiate coaches that attend the AVCA Convention in Tampa, Florida. The cost $99 per athlete. Athletes that choose to register will:
participate in the talent showcase [on Saturday, December 16]
athletics metric testing called the AVCA Volleyball Performance Index
receive insight into the collegiate recruiting process and tips to improve their visibility
Voting for the Two-Year College Representative and NCAA D-III Women’s Representative positions on the AVCA Board of Directors will be conducted October 24-27, 2023.
Candidates interested in seeking any available AVCA board positions need to present a written notification of interest via e-mail to Kennedy Wells. Upon receipt of the written notification of interest, it will be required to also complete the AVCA Board Questionnaire (which will be sent upon receipt of the written notification of interest) by Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 5:00p.m. Eastern Time. Both the written notification of interest and the AVCA Board Questionnaire must be completed by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, October 19th to be eligible for this election.
Any interested candidates must be at least 21 years of age, be an active coach within the coaching group (Two-Year College and NCAA D-III Women) they will represent and shall be an active AVCA member in good standing on the date of election through their term(s) on the AVCA Board.
Current Two-Year College Representative Coach Shelby Forchtner (New Mexico Military Institute) will be seeking her first full three-year term after being appointed to the Board upon the retirement of Coach Paula Wiedemann. Current NCAA D-III Women Representative Coach Erica Rau (Oberlin College) will be the incumbent and will be seeking a second three-year term.
Coach Erin Lindsey (Santa Clara), Awards Representative will exit the board effective December 31, 2023. A new Awards Representative will be appointed by the AVCA president effective (retroactive to) January 1, 2024. The board will take final action at the December meeting on a Bylaw change to institute a non-voting At-Large Representative board seat effective (retroactive to) January 1, 2023. 2023 Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge Recap
Congratulations to the #1 pair from Webber of Carson Barnes and Ayden Keeter on winning the 2023 USAV Beach Men’s Collegiate Challenge! The Lincoln Memorial pair of Matthew Gentry and John Leurs finished 2nd and Penn St’s Ryan Merk and Michael Valenzi took 3rd. Full results here.
Committee overturns IHSAA ruling, says beach and indoor volleyball are different sports
A review committee has ruled in favor of Roncalli junior Logan Bell and overturned an Indiana High School Athletic Association ruling that forbade high school athletes from participating in beach volleyball events during their high school season without losing a year of eligibility. Bell’s parents had requested guidance over the summer on IHSAA bylaws regarding competition in a different sport during the high school season. In response, IHSAA deemed the two should be considered the same sport, a decision that ran counter NFHS and AVCA guidance. This reversal aligns Indiana with several other states that distinguish beach and indoor volleyball as separate sports. More here.
Young U.S. Men’s Team to Play for NORCECA Final 6 Title
A young U.S. Men’s Team will compete for the NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six on Sept. 19-24 at the Flair Airlines Hangar, Edmonton Expo Centre. The six teams competing are Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States. With the U.S. Men’s Senior Team in Tokyo getting ready for the FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifier, the Final Six tournament is a good chance to give young players more international experience. U.S. Women Advance at Qualifier
The U.S. Women’s National Team improved to 3-0 at the FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifier as it defeated Slovenia, 3-1 on Tuesday in Łódź, Poland. At the qualifier, eight teams are each playing seven round-robin matches over nine days. The top two teams will qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. Read more.

Last week on the MasterCoaches Wednesday Weekly Buzz our topic was “The College/International VB Mix.” We started with Mick Haley reviewing the most recent results and significant play from NCAA Women’s DI play last week. Then Mick and Fran Flory interviewed Erin Virtue and Alfee Reft talking about their dual role with college coaching while assisting the USA National Team. Bill Walton followed that up with a detailed discussion about the upcoming qualifier in Poland for our USA volleyball teams.
This week our topic is “The PVF Rooster Review.” We will interview two of our PVF coaches Todd Dagenais & Shelton Collier. They will both introduce you to their respective rosters and will provide our listeners with some personal insights on these athletes. We also plan to ask them to fill us in on some of the inner workings around this new pro league.

Steve Loeswick,Coastal Carolina University’s head women’s beach volleyball coach since 2018, has been named interim coach of the Chanticleers’ women’s volleyball program for the remainder of the 2023 season. Loeswick replaces Jozsef Forman, who recently resigned due to family reasons.
