NCHSAA Officially Sanctions Boys Volleyball, Marking Historic Milestone for North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (MAY 6, 2026) — A historic milestone was reached today as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) officially sanctioned boys high school volleyball, paving the way for the sport’s first official season in the 2026–27 school year.
The decision represents a transformative moment for thousands of student-athletes across the state, providing a clear, equitable pathway to represent their schools and compete under a unified structure. With sanctioning, boys volleyball programs will now operate with consistent standards, expectations, and support statewide.
“This changes everything,” advocates said. “For years, athletes, coaches, parents, and officials worked tirelessly to remove barriers and create opportunity. Today’s announcement delivers fairness, visibility, and long-term sustainability for boys volleyball in North Carolina.”
The achievement follows more than a decade of collective effort and support, including critical grant funding and advocacy from the First Point Volleyball Foundation and the Carolina Region Volleyball.
Sanctioning ensures a true level playing field for all programs and solidifies boys volleyball as a permanent and celebrated part of the state’s high school sports landscape.
“This has been 10 years in the making, and this achievement belongs to everyone who believed in it and fought for it.”
