In this weeks video presented by Gold Medal Squared, we discuss different tactics that are commonly used in men’s volleyball. We want our tactics to be based on trends, and these options give us the flexibility to adapt based on what the offense is doing.
NFHS: Boys High School Volleyball Grows by Over 10,000 Participants
According the latest NFHS participation data, boys high school volleyball grew by 10,800 participants in 2022-23. The total number of participants is 77,287. This is up from 66,487 in 2021-22 and increase of 16.24%. This is the largest jump in boys volleyball participation numbers on a year-over-year comparison since the NFHS began publishing participation numbers. Only boys indoor track and field grew by a larger percentage (18.98%).
The NFHS is still expected to announce the state-by-state participation numbers. In the past, a significant amount of high school volleyball players we not counted due to a lack of varsity sanctioning in these athletes’ state.
The NCAA Division Competition Oversight Committee at its recent meeting approved the SIAC receiving an automatic bid to the Division I-II men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament starting in 2024.
The committee opted to provide the SIAC a waiver because of the conference’s commitment to expansion after losing one of its original men’s volleyball programs. It also recognized the SIAC’s efforts at “fostering growth and diversity in a region that has had little representation” in NCAA men’s volleyball, according to the committee’s meeting minutes.
University of Jamestown Applies for NCAA DII Membership
The University of Jamestown is applying to join the NSIC ( Nothern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) which currently sits at the NCAA DII level. This report is confirmed by Austin Hieb, the university’s athletic director. The UJ Jimmies are currently an NAIA school that plays in the GPAC (Great Plains Athletic Conference). This application process is the first step in the official process, allowing both the school and the conference to get better looks at each other according to Hieb.
VolleyballMag.com recently released its 2023 College Volleyball Recruiting Rankings. USC edged UC Santa Barbara and Hawai’i for the top spot in this year’s rankings. The rankings are voted on by an elite panel of NCAA Division I-II men’s coaches.
University of Hawaii assistant men’s volleyball coach Milan Zarkovic earned his U.S. citizenship last week, much to the delight of many of his former and current players and colleagues. Congratulations Coach Zarkovic!

Fort Mill, South Carolina Hosts First Ever Boys Volleyball Matches
Monday night was a historic one for the city of Fort Mill, South Carolina as the three high schools got together for a special tri-match.
The boys volleyball teams for Fort Mill, Catawba Ridge, and Nation Ford High School’s each played each other and kicked off a new era of sports in the mill-town.
First Point Volleyball Foundation recently published an extremely helpful database that shows the most important leadership members in that state’s high school sports legislature and the person(s) most involved with growing boys volleyball. The list proudly features contacts from all 50 states.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Huntsville, Alabama, will be the site of the Second Annual AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach Championships. The championships will feature a women’s pairs national championship and a men’s team national championship. The men’s event will bring four schools to Huntsville to compete for the first men’s collegiate beach team national championship. Read more here.

To join the Men’s Collegiate Beach Volleyball Alliance an active member coach of the AVCA must complete the registration information. The nominating coach serves as the official representative for all men’s collegiate beach activities at the college.

AVCA Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship Now Accepting Applications and Contributions
Coaches 4 Coaches provides scholarships, through contributions from AVCA members, to young coaches and recent college graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in volleyball coaching & attending their first AVCA Convention.
Scholarships will cover convention registration and hotel for the 2023 AVCA Annual Convention in TAMPA, December 13-17.

2023 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship coming to West Virginia Next Week!
2023 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship presented by USA Volleyball is coming to Charleston, West Virginia on Sept. 5-10, 2023. Teams competing at the Continental Championship will receive points toward their world rankings, which will help determine who qualifies for the 2024 Olympic Games. U.S. Men Finish Pan Am Cup in Fifth
he U.S. Men’s Team competing at the Pan American Cup finished in fifth place after sweeping Colombia (25-18, 25-20, 25-15) on Sunday in Guadalajara, Mexico.
USA Volleyball Announces New Format for 2024 Boys Junior Nationals
USA Volleyball announced a new format for the 2024 Boys Junior National Championship (BJNC) in Dallas, at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center.
The 2024 BJNC schedule has been modified to allow all ages and divisions (Open, USA, American and Club) to be contested over the same four-day period, June 26-29.
As an added event enhancement, USA Volleyball is including a National Team Development Program (NTDP) Experience on June 25, 2024, the day before BJNC competition begins.
Congratulations to manager Chris Hosley and the entire New York Legion program on their second straight VLA title. New York LVC took down Boston Bounce VBC in the final to claim the title.
Stunners Sweep Wild to Capture their Second NVA Title
The Orange County Stunners’ mixture of veteran and youthful talent proved too much for the San Diego Wild in the NVA Cup Finals, as the Stunners 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 at Long Beach City College.
Corey Chavers, who was named Tournament MVP and man of the match, led the Stunners while Matt Hilling added 10 kills and three service aces. The Wild, competing in their inaugural season in 2023, were led by Brandon Rattray who had 14 kills while Matt Knigge added six winners.
