With the move to NCAA Division II now a few months away, Jessup University continues its growth with the announcement of Men’s Volleyball, the university’s 17th varsity program. Jessup University plans to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Interested candidates for the men’s volleyball coaching vacancy can apply here.
The River States Conference [NAIA] will add Men’s Volleyball as a championship sport next season. Participating will be five current members of the RSC, and three affiliates from Mid‐South Conference. Several other members of the River States Conference are currently evaluating the potential addition of the sport. Details here.
Tom Tait, an integral part of the Penn State community as a coach, mentor and professor spanning across four decades, passed away January 10. Tait was often referred to as the “Father of Penn State Volleyball” as the first head coach of both programs, starting the women’s program in 1976 and leading the men’s program’s transition to varsity status in 1977. Tait was an inaugural member of the AVCA Hall of Fame. He is also in the EIVA Hall of Fame and was named an All-Time Great Coach by USA Volleyball. Read more.

NCAA Convention Highlights
In his first address at the NCAA Convention, President Charlie Baker outlined goals for growing the college sports fanbase, addressed sports wagering issues and student-athlete wellbeing, and expanded on his recent player compensation proposal, among other talking points.
Legislative proposals introduced include: remove cannabinoids from the list of substances included in drug testing at NCAA championships. Permit noncoaching, sport-specific staff members to assist in drills during practices. Eliminate questionnaires sent to prospects prior to the first allowable date for recruiting communications.
The NCAA Board of Governors approved an updated version of Mental Health Best Practices that all member schools will be required to follow, effective Aug. 1. Includes information about mental health and sports betting, social media, corruption in sport, suicide contagion, and name, image and likeness.

USA Volleyball will celebrate some of the sport’s greatest athletes, coaches, officials and leaders at its 2024 Hall of Fame ceremony on May 22 – one day before the Open National Championship starts in Columbus. Four indoor volleyball greats will receive the All-Time Great Player Award: Robyn Ah Mow, Heather Bown, Jeff Nygaard and Reid Priddy. More here.
