Motivational Interviewing for Coaches

“Motivational Interviewing” is a communication technique developed by Miller & Rollnick. Created to deal with difficult situations in clinical settings (addiction, violence,…) it is used more and more in sport settings with great success. The focus on really listening when talking to athletes, giving the athlete autonomy and use the athlete's resources help to handle resistance to change. This communication-technique can be used in everyday coaching, when trying to change your players armswing or approach but it is also very effective when you are faced to talk to your athletes about difficult or delicate topics like nutrition, behavior on and off the court or balancing academic and athletic duties.
