Student Athlete Mental Health & Its Importance to Coaches

Student Athlete Mental Health and Its Importance to Coaches

Guest blog from sportspsychology.org

Student-athlete mental health is of paramount importance to coaches, yet less than half of student athletes feel comfortable going to a coach with their mental health concerns. To make it easier for coaches to broach the topic of mental health with their athletes, we created this educational resource that should help athletes and coaches alike gain access to materials that will foster a supportive environment where mental well-being is prioritized alongside athletic performance.

The cornerstone of this resource is the inclusion of scholarly articles that establish the connection between athletic success and mental health. Research published in prominent journals offers information on how psychological factors can significantly influence an athlete's performance. These studies highlight the importance of mental toughness, stress management, and the psychological impact of injury and recovery. Coaches are encouraged to read this literature to understand the scientific basis for mental health practices in sports.
